Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a common procedure used primarily to combat the signs of aging. Blepharoplasty corrects wrinkles, bags, heavy lids, and even can help improve peripheral vision. Desired outcomes of the surgery are generally a more youthful and ‘awake’ look.

This is achieved by the removal or repositioning of excess tissue. The surrounding muscles and tendons are also reinforced to achieve the desired look. External incisions are made along the natural lines of the eyelid skin. Skin and fat is then removed. Because the incision follows the natural curve of the eyelid, it will be well camouflaged when healed.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Following the surgery, blurred or double vision for a few days is not uncommon. Temporary swelling at the corner of the eyelids results in the difficulty of closing the eyes, but as the swelling subsides, this goes away. Usually after one week, patients return to the hospital to remove sutures. The recuperation period one to two weeks, and wounds completely heal within three months.

Most patients opt to have eyelid surgery performed in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a browlift, facelift, or skin resurfacing. When done collectively, virtually all patients are rewarded with superior results.

Eyelid Surgery Q&A’s

What is the appropriate age for blepharoplasty?

Can bulging fat be removed during eyelid surgery?

How long will the swelling and bruising last?

Are the scars following the surgery very noticeable?

What is Asian eyelid surgery?

I have dark circles beneath my eyes, will blepharoplasty correct this?

How long will the improvement last?

Can a brow lift correct the eyelids?

Q: What is the appropriate age for blepharoplasty?

A:  Due to eyelid skin being much thinner than that of the rest of the face, the eyes are usually the first facial feature to deteriorate. A person is at the correct age when the loss of attractiveness becomes enough of a bother to consider revision.

Q: Can bulging fat be removed during eyelid surgery?

A: No, the internal fat tissues are too delicate to be surgically removed. Furthermore, fat removal is no longer a major part of eyelid surgery.

Q: How long will the swelling and bruising last?

A: The greatest amount of swelling and bruising will be right after the surgery. Most can expect these conditions to subside within 7 to 10 days.

Q: Are the scars following the surgery very noticeable?

A: Full thinning of the scars will occur within six months. During this time, the scarring is not visible unless closely inspected. The incisions are hidden in the crease and along the back of the eyelid.

Q: What is Asian eyelid surgery?

A: Nearly half of all Asian people are born with a crease on their upper eyelid. This surgery removes that crease creating a smooth uniform eyelid.

Q: I have dark circles beneath my eyes, will blepharoplasty correct this?

A: Not completely. The depressions are caused by a deficiency of soft tissue along the cheek and are not directly associated with the eyelid. While eyelid surgery and chemical peels may help, they will not completely eliminate them.

Q: How long will the improvement last?

A: While procedures such as brow lifts and face lifts are designed to fight gravity, blepharoplasty combats aging skin. Eyelid surgery can be considered permanent in most people, and generally only needs to be performed once.

Q: Can a brow lift correct the eyelids?

A: Some patients have found that performing a brow lift ‘pulls’ the upper eyelid skin and blepharoplasty is not required. However, a brow lift cannot address weakened lower eyelids.
