Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift is used to reshape the upper arm from the armpit to the elbow. An arm lift is the best way to overcome the stretched, sagging, or damaged skin of the upper arm. Loose tissue is removed to improve the contour and restore a more youthful, healthier appearance.
Arm lift surgery is performed on a large variety of individuals. While many patients are those who have experienced significant weight loss, some are of normal weight who simply need a little tightening. Older women with excess skin on the upper arms are also good candidates for brachioplasty.
An arm lift is performed on an outpatient basis under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a T shaped incision along the inner side of the arm. The length of the incision is dependant on the patients needs. Excess fat and skin are then removed from the area. In some cases, liposuction is also used to remove fat. The incision is then stitched. Under ideal circumstances the scar will be hidden completely in the armpit. In more severe cases, the scar will only be visible with the upper arm away from the body.
The improvement in appearance is evident immediately following surgery. Compression garments should be worn following surgery to control swelling and ensure proper healing. Patients should avoid lifting or strenuous activities for three to four weeks following surgery. Arms will appear firmer and final contours will be visible 3 to 6 months following surgery.
